N. Wright

Who Am I?

My name is Nathaniel Wright.I'm a small business owner, a full-time student on the road to becoming a doctor, and now a caregiver to my mother. On May 17th, 2023, she suffered a stroke and had a mild heart attack. At that moment, the choice was made with the help of my sister for me to become her caregiver.

The Bronx

Morris Houses

So began my return to my old community located in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, Morris Houses. I noticed a community recovering from the pandemic, grieving from the loss of many of our beloved friends and family.

Morris Houses

My Observation

I returned home to a community lacking fundamental modern advances such as a community website, Health initiatives, or even weekly/monthly on-site social programs to benefit the whole community. While not to say it didn't exist, it did not appear so for the Morris I section.

Transportation

How is this an issue?

Upon returning, I noticed seniors could not access reliable car services to and from doctor appointments. Some were too afraid to ride public transportation or were physically unable to due to disability or conditions preventing them.

Community Activities?

Activities for the community

While it's only been a month, I haven't noticed any activities for the community that didn't involve unhealthy eating. I observed a basketball court and a small park needing an upgrade and safer playground equipment. I've noticed absolutely nothing to encourage seniors to leave their apartments.

Health Insurance education

Health Initiatives

Over the years, I was informed of many health recruitment events but no real health initiatives. Just speaking with people around the neighborhood, most were unaware of the other benefits of their coverage or even routine health and wellness information readily available to them.

Taking action

Solutions

Within the first week, I thought about an old website I had created, and I began to reimagine it in a way to benefit the community. I wanted this website to showcase Morris Houses, provide awareness, and empower the community in things that matter most to them.

Project Transport

Pilot program

As our older adult population in Morris Houses continues to grow, the results have been deteriorating health outcomes for a vulnerable population of Bronxites who frequently feel alone. Due to a lack of access to dependable transportation, our seniors struggle with increased social isolation and loneliness, which are already difficult problems. Factor in that they may not have easy access to their healthcare professionals and other crucial components of a healthy lifestyle, such as access to social events, activities, or sometimes family gatherings.

The details

The goal of the program

Our pilot program using a HIPAA-supported platform will allow us to easily coordinate rides to and from appointments, alleviating the pressure on patients and caretakers. Our goal is to support broader access to essential health care and other services for individuals and communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic, particularly people of color living on low incomes.
While also improving the quality of life for Seniors and people with disabilities in low-income communities by providing them with access to arts, recreation and cultural experiences.
